Les Guerriers de la Déesse

Naoshi Mizuta est de retour dans ce qui pourrait être la dernière extension de Final Fantasy XI, dont le successeur (nom de code Rapture) est déjà en développement depuis deux ou trois ans. Les Guerriers de la Déesse (アトルガンの神兵, altana no shinpei, "les guerriers sacrés d'Altana" en japonais) est sorti dans le monde entier en novembre dernier, mais Square Enix a décidé d'attendre avant de publier la bande originale, afin d'y inclure les pistes originales ainsi que celles composées par Mizuta après la sortie de l'add-on. Donc, cet album devrait être complet. Au final, il y a plus de 150 morceaux de musique dans FFXI ! Pas mal, tout de même ! Cela dit, Nobuo Uematsu conserve le record absolu de la série : il a aussi écrit plus de 150 morceaux pour FFIX, mais en moins d'un an. Bon, je parle de quantité, mais ça ne rime pas toujours avec "qualité" (c'est le cas avec FFIX, quand même).

Alors, Square Enix vient juste de lancer un site Internet pour la bande son des Guerriers de la Déesse. Cliquez ici pour le visiter. Vous pouvez écouter quatre extraits, en plus de la musique de fond pendant l'animation Flash. "Autumn Footfalls" est le nouveau thème que Mizuta a écrit pour Ronfaure du passé. C'est chouette, vous ne trouvez pas ? La date de sortie est le 23 avril, la référence SQEX-10013. Et voici la liste des titres :

Naoshi Mizuta is back in what could be the very last expansion pack for Final Fantasy XI, which successor, codenamed Rapture, has already been in development for two or three years. Wings of the Goddess (アトルガンの神兵, altana no shinpei, "the holy warriors of Altana" in Japanese) was released worldwide last November, but Square Enix decided to wait before publishing the soundtrack, in order to have the original tracks as well as those composed by Mizuta after the release of the expansion pack. Thus, this album is supposed to be complete. In the end, FFXI has more than 150 pieces of music! I mean, wow! However, Nobuo Uematsu still holds the ultimate record of the series: he wrote more than 150 pieces for FFIX too, but in less than a year. Oh well, I am talking about quantity, but it does not always mean "quality"--in the case of FFIX, it does.

So, Square Enix has just launched a website for the soundtrack of Wings of the Goddess. Click here to visit it. You can listen to four samples, besides the BGM that plays during the Flash animation. "Autumn Footfalls" is the new theme Mizuta composed for Ronfaure of the past. Don't you think it is pretty nice? Release date is April 23rd, catalog number is SQEX-10013. And here is the tracklist:

Sigma Harmonics pour Hamauzu

Square Enix vient juste de dévoiler un tout nouveau projet : il s'agit de Sigma Harmonics, un mélange de jeu d'aventure et de RPG pour la Nintendo DS. Le jeu est actuellement développé par d'anciens membres de l'équipe de Dirge of Cerberus, particulièrement le réalisateur Hiroki Chiba, le designer des personnages Yusaku Nakaaki... et le compositeur Masashi Hamauzu ! Eh oui, il ne travaille pas que sur Final Fantasy XIII, heureusement d'ailleurs ! C'est tout ce que nous savons pour le moment, mais c'est quand même une bonne nouvelle. Le jeu est terminé à 60% et devrait sortir au Japon cet été. Aah, encore plus de Hamauzu...

Square Enix has just unveiled an entirely new project in the Japanese magazine Famitsu: it is Sigma Harmonics, a mix of adventure game and RPG for the Nintendo DS. The game is currently developed by former Dirge of Cerberus staffers, most particularly director Hiroki Chiba, character designer Yusaku Nakaaki... and music composer Masashi Hamauzu ! That's right, he is not only working on Final Fantasy XIII, fortunately. This is all we know at the present moment, but this is good news anyway. The game is 60% complete and should be out in Japan this summer. Aah, more Hamauzu...

Je crois que Nobuo Uematsu et ses Black Mages ont voulu s'éclater. Et on dirait que c'est le cas. Ils viennent enfin de dévoiler la liste des pistes de leur troisième album à travers un impressionnant résumé vidéo (clic droit pour télécharger). Il y a une très grosse surprise à la fin, après quelques extraits de pistes déjà introduites et de nouveaux morceaux, quand Uematsu lui-même annonce que "Darkness and Starlight" est en fait le nom d'un de leurs arrangements. "Maria and Draco" ? Une chanson de 15 minutes avec les chanteurs d'opéra originaux (mr.goo est là !) et les Black Mages faisant les chœurs ? Ils sont devenus cinglés ? En écoutant les extraits, je pense qu'ils ont voulu se faire plaisir de la manière la plus baroque possible. Ça va être... fun. Je dois avouer que je bous d'impatience. Ça et drammatica la semaine suivante ? Square Enix Music veut notre mort. Une mort délicieuse, en tout cas.

Ceci étant dit, vous devez vous demander ce qu'est la dernière piste. En réalité, Nobuo Uematsu en explique l'origine sur le site officiel de l'album (elle est dédiée à Yoshitaka Tagawa, un jeune homme décédé en janvier dernier à 22 ans des suites d'une leucémie, et que Uematsu a rencontré pour la première fois il y a 8 ans). C'est une histoire triste, bien sûr, mais je sens que Uematsu veut exprimer un message d'espoir dans son texte. Peut-être a-t-il fait de même avec la musique. Je vois la vois mal être du hard rock, cela dit.

PS : maintenant que j'y pense, le titre de ce message pourrait être la note de l'album. Pitié, The Black Mages III, sois à la mesure de notre attente !

I guess Nobuo Uematsu and the Black Mages wanted to have fun. Apparently they did. They finally unveiled the complete tracklist for their third album through an impressive digest video (right click to download). There is a very big surprise at the end, after some samples from already previewed and new tracks, when Uematsu himself announces that "Darkness and Starlight" is actually the name of one of their arrangements. "Maria and Draco"? A 15-minute song with the original opera singers (mr.goo FTW!) and The Black Mages doing chorus?! Have they gone crazy? Listening to the samples, I think they wanted to enjoy themselves in the most baroque way. This is going to be... fun. I must admit, I really can't wait. This, and drammatica the week after? Square Enix Music wants us dead. A delightful death, that is.

This being said, you might wonder what the last track is. Actually, Nobuo Uematsu explains its origin on the official page of the album. A sad story, indeed, but I feel Uematsu wants to express hope through his message. Maybe he has done the same with his music. I can't see a hard rock piece here, though.

PS: now that I think of it, the title of this message might actually be the score of the album. Please, The Black Mages III, leave up to our expectations!

Non, non, le titre n'est pas une note, mais le nombre de pistes de The Black Mages III que nous connaissons. Cinq sur dix ? Eh bien, le label de Nobuo Uematsu, Dog Ear Records, dévoile lentement mais sûrement le contenu de cet album tant attendu, et il y a des surprises à la clé ! No, no, the title is not a score, but the number of tracks from The Black Mages III that we already know. Five out of ten? Well, Nobuo Uematsu's label Dog Ear Records is slowly but surely unveiling the tracklist of this long-awaited album, and there are clearly some surprises! So, what do you think? Yes, I think including "Memoro de la S^tono" is pretty surprising too, so let's hope they will not mess it up! Also, they decided to include the last battle from FFIII which was also featured on the soundtrack of the DS remake, so it may not look like a good idea since we already know it. If you want to listen to samples from these tracks, except "Memoro de la S^tono", pay The Black Mages' site a visit and download the two new movies. Both are subtitled in English.

In the second interview, they are talking about chorus. And... they are clearly stating that they are the chorus. What? Uematsu singing? Bring back mr.goo! So, let us wait and see. March 19th will be the D-Day.

Un drame se prépare

Cela fait déjà 20 ans que Yôko Shimomura a commencé à travailler dans la musique de jeu vidéo. D'abord chez Capcom, où elle a composé pour le jeu de combat culte Street Fighter II, puis chez Square (maintenant Square Enix) où des titres de haute volée tels que Parasite Eve, Legend of Mana et Kingdom Hearts ont bénéficié de bandes sons fantastiques grâce à elle. Elle est désormais à son propre compte, ce qui lui permet de collaborer avec plus de développeurs, et même avec des producteurs d'animes.

En tout cas, Square Enix a décidé de célébrer cet "anniversaire" en publiant un nouvel album intitulé drammatica -The Very Best of Yoko Shimomura-. Comme le nom l'indique, c'est une compilation de ses travaux chez Square (évidemment). Le meilleur, c'est que la sélection sera orchestrée ! Et attendez, c'est pas fini ! L'album proposera également une piste bonus tirée de Final Fantasy Versus XIII ! Je dois être en train de rêver. Heureusement, ce n'est pas le cas :

Le nom "drammatica" vient du destin dramatique des personnages des jeux que Shimomura a mis en musique. Sans cela, elle n'aurait jamais écrit de tels chefs-d'oeuvre... j'imagine. Pour le moment, aucun détail n'a filtré concernant le contenu de l'album, en dehors de la piste bonus, mais des morceaux de Front Mission, Parasite Eve, Legend of Mana, Kingdom Hearts et Heroes of Mana ont toutes leurs chances de s'y trouver. Quant à Versus XIII, serait-ce la chanson en latin des premières vidéos du jeu ?

C'est peut-être une coïncidence, mais Shimomura s'est rendue en Allemagne en janvier... pas pour ses vacances, mais pour enregistrer quelque chose, en tout cas en apparence. Elle a récemment ajouté un court message accompagné de photos d'un enregistrement avec un orchestre sur son blog personnel. Je trouve que les musiciens n'ont pas l'air très japonais. Alors, Shimomura a-t-elle enregistré sa compilation en Allemagne, comme Masashi Hamauzu avec son solo Vielen Dank l'année dernière ? Difficile à dire. En tout cas, la sortie de drammatica est une excellente nouvelle pour tous les fans de Shimomura. Espérons en apprendre plus dans les prochaines semaines.

It has already been 20 years since Yoko Shimomura started working as a video gamer composer. First at Capcom, where she composed music for cult fighting game Street Fighter II, then at Square (now Square Enix), where high-scale titles such as Parasite Eve, Legend of Mana and Kingdom Hearts featured fantastic soundtracks thanks to her. Now she is freelance, allowing her to collaborate with more game developers, and even with anime producers.

Well, in any case, Square Enix has decided to celebrate this "birthday" with the release of a new album entitled drammatica -The Very Best of Yoko Shimomura-. As the name implies, this is a greatest hits compilation of her works for Square -- indeed. Well, the good news is that the selection will be orchestrated! Wait a sec, this is not over! This album will also feature a bonus track from Final Fantasy Versus XIII! Come on, I must be dreaming. Fortunately, I am not:

The name "drammatica" comes from the dramatic fate of the characters in the games Shimomura scored. Without this, she would have never composed so many masterpieces... I guess. As of now, there are no more details concerning the content of the album outside of the bonus track, but pieces from Front Mission, Parasite Eve, Legend of Mana, Kingdom Hearts and Heroes of Mana are most likely to appear. As for Versus XIII, could it be the Latin song featured in the first trailers of the game?

It may be a coincidence, but Shimomura has travalled to Germany in January... not for holidays, but to record something, or so it seems. She has recently added a short message with pictures from an orchestra recording on her personal blog. To me, the musicians do not look like Japanese people. So, did Shimomura record the compilation in Germany, like Masashi Hamauzu did last year with his solo album Vielen Dank? I really can't say. In any case, the release of drammatica is an excellent news for all Shimomura fans. We will hopefully learn more in the upcoming weeks.
