More details about Last Ranker (announced here) have just emerged now that the game is officially on tracks. In a new post on her blog, Yoko Shimomura announced that part of the soundtrack was recorded in Europe. Some sessions took place in Stockholm, or so it seems, with a small orchestra. She also wrote that Hiroyuki "Chopin" Nakayama will be playing the piano. His last collaboration with Shimomura was earlier this year, when he played the piano for the Kingdom Hearts piano collections album. It is the first time in 15 years that Shimomura is working with Capcom on a new game and, as such, she also writes about how honoured she feels to be part of the project. I always feel amazed when I remember she is responsible for the character themes in Street Fighter II.
As for the type of music one should expect in Last Ranker, Yoko Shimomura originally intended to write opera-like tracks, but game director Kazuya Niinou rejected the idea, stating that he was more interested in "awesome sounding" (sic) songs that would enhance the effect of the battles. Actually, most of the game is devoted to fighting, so Niinou wanted the battle themes to be the highlight of the soundtrack.
A teaser website has been launched today, but doesn't feature any BGM.
